Mixing in the Ocean (Fall 2006 Observational Oceanography Seminar)
Structure:
1. Introduction:
Munk and Wunsch, Abyssal Recipes II
This will service as a broad introduction to mixing and energy input
questions.
2. Large-scale horizontal mixing induced by eddies (3 weeks)
Some possible papers:
- Jayne, S. R.---2 or 3 model analysis papers looking at the role
of eddies in meridional heat flux in the ocean.
- Roeemich, D.---eddy heat flux studies
- de Szoeke and Levine---mixing across the ACC.
- Phillips and Rintoul---current meter analysis of eddy mixing
- Johnson and Bryden---framework for thinking about wind energy
input, eddy heat flux, form stress (with current meter data)
- Gille, 2003---eddy heat fluxes across the ACC, inferred from
floats
3. Tides and dissipation (diapycnal mixing) (3 weeks)
